Why did 'r' get upgraded?

I just ran the command brew upgrade git gcc go graphviz tmux vault, and it dutifully upgraded the packages I asked for - and also seems to have upgraded one more that I didn’t ask for, r.

Can anyone see in the output below (sorry for the long paste! I can put it in a pastebin or something if that’s the convention here) why r was pulled in? To my knowledge it’s not a prerequisite of anything else that was upgraded. Is it because r depends on packages that I upgraded? If so, does that happen every time a dependent gets upgraded?

Thanks!

==> Caveats
We agreed to the Qt open source license for you.
If this is unacceptable you should uninstall.

qt is keg-only, which means it was not symlinked into /usr/local,
because Qt 5 has CMake issues when linked.

If you need to have qt first in your PATH run:
  echo 'export PATH="/usr/local/opt/qt/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.zshrc

For compilers to find qt you may need to set:
  export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/opt/qt/lib"
  export CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/opt/qt/include"

For pkg-config to find qt you may need to set:
  export PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/usr/local/opt/qt/lib/pkgconfig"

==> openblas
openblas is keg-only, which means it was not symlinked into /usr/local,
because macOS provides BLAS and LAPACK in the Accelerate framework.

For compilers to find openblas you may need to set:
  export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/opt/openblas/lib"
  export CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/opt/openblas/include"

For pkg-config to find openblas you may need to set:
  export PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/usr/local/opt/openblas/lib/pkgconfig"

==> numpy
If you use system python (that comes - depending on the OS X version -
with older versions of numpy, scipy and matplotlib), you may need to
ensure that the brewed packages come earlier in Python's sys.path with:
  mkdir -p /Users/kwilliams/Library/Python/2.7/lib/python/site-packages
  echo 'import sys; sys.path.insert(1, "/usr/local/lib/python3.7/site-packages")' >> /Users/kwilliams/Library/Python/2.7/lib/python/site-packages/homebrew.pth
==> expat
expat is keg-only, which means it was not symlinked into /usr/local,
because macOS already provides this software and installing another version in
parallel can cause all kinds of trouble.

If you need to have expat first in your PATH run:
  echo 'export PATH="/usr/local/opt/expat/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.zshrc

For compilers to find expat you may need to set:
  export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/opt/expat/lib"
  export CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/opt/expat/include"

For pkg-config to find expat you may need to set:
  export PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/usr/local/opt/expat/lib/pkgconfig"

==> libpq
libpq is keg-only, which means it was not symlinked into /usr/local,
because conflicts with postgres formula.

If you need to have libpq first in your PATH run:
  echo 'export PATH="/usr/local/opt/libpq/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.zshrc

For compilers to find libpq you may need to set:
  export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/opt/libpq/lib"
  export CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/opt/libpq/include"

For pkg-config to find libpq you may need to set:
  export PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/usr/local/opt/libpq/lib/pkgconfig"

==> nss
nss is keg-only, which means it was not symlinked into /usr/local,
because Firefox can pick this up instead of the built-in library, resulting in
random crashes without meaningful explanation.

Please see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1142646 for details.

If you need to have nss first in your PATH run:
  echo 'export PATH="/usr/local/opt/nss/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.zshrc

For compilers to find nss you may need to set:
  export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/opt/nss/lib"
  export CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/opt/nss/include"

For pkg-config to find nss you may need to set:
  export PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/usr/local/opt/nss/lib/pkgconfig"

brew upgrade git gcc go graphviz tmux vault 111.85s user 79.14s system 87% cpu 3:37.50 total

Hi.

You asked to upgrade gcc. r depends on gcc. So we need to upgrade r, because if we left the previous r in place, it would still link to the old gcc, which is now gone.
The same holds for the other reverse dependencies:

Upgrading 5 dependents:
dep 0.5.3 -> 0.5.4, openblas 0.3.6_1 -> 0.3.7, numpy 1.16.4 -> 1.16.4_1, gdal 2.4.1_1 -> 2.4.2, r 3.6.0_2 -> 3.6.1_1
